Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius) is a resilient evergreen native to Utah's high-elevation landscapes. Its dense, upright form and leathery, curled leaves provide year-round structure and texture, making it a standout in any garden. While its spring flowers are modest, the plant produces distinctive, corkscrew-shaped seed plumes in late summer, adding visual interest.
This species thrives in well-drained soils and requires minimal water once established and no supplemental watering at higher elevations.
This plant grows slowly—truly a long-term investment. While a mature Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany can reach up to 30 feet tall, it may take decades to get there. Plant one now, and your grandchildren might one day enjoy the shade beneath its gnarled branches. In ideal conditions, it can reach shrub-size within 10-15 years.
Though incredibly low-maintenance, be aware that deer and elk may browse its foliage, particularly in high-pressure areas. Ideal for those designing with permanence and resilience in mind.
