Western Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) brings seasonal drama: fragrant white flower clusters in spring, followed by tart, dark fruit in summer that wildlife eagerly devour, and vibrant foliage in fall, then strong branch structure in winter. It’s a natural for wildlife gardens, low or wet areas, and erosion control plantings thanks to its rhizomatous spread and dense form.
That said, it needs consistent moisture—especially in warmer or drier Utah settings—and space to spread. Its fruits are charmingly tart but valuable both for birds and for making jams. Be aware: suckering can be prolific, and branches may sour if left unchecked. A little pruning keeps it tidy, while its rich wildlife value and four-season appeal reward stewardship.
