Salina Wildrye (Leymus salinus) is a more compact, regionally native grass designed to deliver big benefits in a smaller footprint. Developed from native stands in Utah and Nevada, this wildrye is ideal for dryland landscapes, roadsides, and reclamation sites where water is limited but durability is a must. It brings the same hardiness as taller native grasses, without overwhelming smaller spaces or companion species.
Its finely textured, blue-green foliage offers a soft contrast in native plantings, while its clumping habit helps control erosion and hold soil in place on slopes. Not only is it quick to establish, it’s also exceptionally low maintenance—no irrigation once established, no mowing, and it’s resistant to browsing and disease. If you're working on a restoration project or want a native grass that stays tidy and tough, Basin Junior checks all the boxes.
