Black Sagebrush (Artemisia nova) is a backbone plant for dry, rocky gardens on Utah's Front. It's especially well adapted to dry, rocky soils with lots of natural lime or mineral content, the kind you’ll often find on Utah’s foothills and open slopes and it thrives where many others struggle, even in soil that’s alkaline or low in organic matter. While its late-season yellow-green blooms are subtle, it's its silvery-green foliage and evergreen structure that bring lasting texture and resilience to landscapes.
Pair it with native grasses and succulents for a 'desert wild' aesthetic, or with native wildflowers in a sunny park strip. Its aromatic foliage adds a soft scent on warm days, even if it’s mostly appreciated for its quiet toughness.
