Blue Wildrye (Elymus glaucus ssp. glaucus) is a cool-season perennial bunchgrass native to the Rocky Mountain west, beloved for its graceful, upright form and blue-green foliage. It thrives in a variety of conditions, from open meadows to forested slopes, and tolerates partial shade better than many other native grasses. This drought-tolerant species prefers well-drained soils but is adaptable to moist sites, making it a versatile choice for restoration projects, meadows, and naturalized landscapes. Its slender flower spikes emerge in late spring to early summer, adding vertical interest and subtle movement to the garden. Blue Wildrye also provides excellent forage for wildlife and serves as a valuable host plant for native butterflies.
