Desert Penstemon (Penstemon pseudospectabilis) is a striking perennial known for its vibrant magenta-pink, tubular flowers that bloom from spring into summer. Native to Arizona and New Mexico, this rare plant has only been found once growing natively in Kane County, Utah. While most penstemon are quite drought tolerant, Desert Penstemon tolerates even less water than most of its cousins and thrives in well-drained soils and requires very little water once established, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens.
Beyond its drought tolerance, Desert Penstemon is a magnet for pollinators, particularly hummingbirds. Its upright growth habit and vivid blooms provide dramatic visual interest earlier than many other native wildflowers and adaptability to poor soils and its extreme drought tolerance make it a reliable performer in dry, challenging environments, while also providing spring interest.
