Desert Sage (Salvia dorrii) is one of the standout native sages of the Intermountain West, prized for its silvery foliage and intensely vivid purple blooms that seem to glow against dry landscapes. Its aromatic leaves release a sharp, minty fragrance when brushed, making it especially enjoyable along pathways, rock gardens, and xeric borders. Even when not in flower, the soft gray-green foliage provides strong year-round texture and contrast.
This plant excels in tough, sunny sites where many ornamentals struggle. Once established, it thrives with very little supplemental water and handles rocky or sandy soils with ease. Pollinators flock to the flowers in late spring, while deer usually leave the foliage alone. Desert Sage works beautifully in waterwise landscapes, native plantings, and naturalistic gardens where its rugged beauty feels perfectly at home.
