Great Basin Penstemon (Penstemon subglaber) is a tough, mountain-adapted native that brings a soft wash of blue-violet color to sunny landscapes without demanding much in return. Its upright stems and narrow foliage give it a natural, meadow-like look that blends beautifully into native plantings, rock gardens, and water-wise borders. When in bloom, this relatively petite penstemon is especially lively—buzzing with bees and other pollinators that are drawn to its tubular flowers.
This is a great choice if you’re aiming for a resilient, low-input garden along the Wasatch Front. It thrives in well-drained soils and handles very dry conditions with ease once established, making it a great choice for xeriscaping. Pair it with other western natives for a cohesive, habitat-friendly planting that looks effortless but performs reliably year after year.
