Plains Prickly Pear (Opuntia polyacantha) is a tough, low-growing prickly pear cactus that feels right at home in Utah’s dry landscapes, from windswept valley floors to rocky foothills. It forms spreading mats of flat, blue-green pads that hug the ground and slowly expand outward, creating a natural, sculptural groundcover that looks good year-round with almost no maintenance. In late spring to early summer, it surprises with cheerful golden-yellow blooms that open wide in the sun and draw in bees and other pollinators. In the fall and winter, its color will shift and skin will wrinkle to protect itself against the cold.
This is one of those plants that thrives on neglect in the best possible way. Once established, it shrugs off heat, poor soil, and long dry spells without complaint, making it a strong choice for water-wise landscaping or restoration-style plantings. Just give it plenty of sun and space to spread, and it will steadily form a resilient, living carpet that gets better with age.
