Prairie Zinnia (Zinnia grandiflora) is a tough, low-spreading native perennial that excels in hot, dry, sunny landscapes where many other plants struggle. It forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat of narrow gray-green foliage that hugs the ground, slowly expanding outward to create a soft, naturalistic carpet. In summer and early fall, it lights up with small, golden-yellow daisy-like flowers that sit just above the foliage, giving the plant a cheerful, long-lasting bloom display without ever looking unruly.
This is a great choice if you're trying to build a waterwise or pollinator-friendly garden with a very natural Western feel. Bees and butterflies are frequent visitors to its blooms, and its aromatic foliage helps keep it largely unbothered by deer. Once established, it needs very little care—just full sun, excellent drainage, and the occasional deep watering during extreme drought. It’s especially well-suited to rock gardens, slopes, xeriscapes, and filling in between stepping stones or larger shrubs where you want a living groundcover that stays low and tidy.
