Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) is a tough native mountain shrub that brings a lush, woodland feel to Utah landscapes. In spring, it produces clusters of creamy flowers that attract pollinators, followed by bright red berries that are highly valued by birds and wildlife. Its naturally arching form works beautifully in native plantings, canyon-style gardens, and partially shaded landscape edges where many other shrubs struggle to thrive.
This species is especially useful for restoring natural character to higher-elevation or foothill landscapes along the Wasatch Front. Once established, it handles Utah’s dry periods reasonably well while still maintaining a fuller, greener appearance than many drought-adapted shrubs. Red Elderberry grows quickly and creates excellent seasonal interest with spring blooms, vibrant summer fruit, and attractive foliage texture throughout the growing season.
