Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) is the classic, rugged evergreen of the Intermountain West, known for its pyramidal form and silvery-blue to dark green foliage that holds its color through winter. This native conifer is well-suited to dry, rocky slopes and is one of the most drought-tolerant conifers available, thriving where irrigation is limited. Its bluish seed cones (often called berries) add ornamental interest and provide valuable winter food for birds.
This is an excellent choice for creating natural windbreaks, privacy screens, or as a stately specimen in a xeric or native landscape. Once established, Rocky Mountain Juniper needs almost no maintenance, making it ideal for low-water landscapes and mountain properties. Its wildlife value, year-round color, and ability to thrive in harsh, sunny exposures make it a cornerstone plant for sustainable western gardens.
