Sacred Datura (Datura wrightii) is one of the most dramatic native wildflowers of the Southwest, producing enormous trumpet-shaped blossoms that seem to glow in the evening light. The flowers open at dusk and release a rich, sweet fragrance that attracts sphinx moths and other nighttime pollinators, creating a garden experience few other native plants can match. Its broad, blue-green foliage forms an impressive mound that gives the plant a bold architectural presence even when not in bloom.
Despite its exotic appearance, Sacred Datura is remarkably well adapted to hot, dry landscapes and thrives in difficult sites where many ornamentals struggle. It is particularly effective in desert-style gardens, native plantings, and xeriscapes.
Gardeners should be aware that all parts of the plant are highly poisonous if consumed.
