Saskatoon Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) is a beautiful, useful native shrub with year-round appeal. In spring, it puts on a show of delicate white blooms just as other plants are waking up. By early summer, its berries ripen into deep blue clusters—sweet, edible, and beloved by birds and people alike. Come fall, its leaves glow with warm gold and orange tones, adding to the seasonal interest.
This species grows larger and more vigorously than its Utah-native cousin, Amelanchier utahensis, making it an excellent choice for hedgerows, edible landscapes, or wildlife plantings in moister areas. It does well on foothill slopes, in valleys with decent drainage, or tucked into irrigated areas of your yard where it will get a bit of supplemental moisture. Pair it with chokecherry, golden currant, or blue elderberry for a native edible hedge that’s beautiful, productive, and pollinator friendly.
