Thickleaf Penstemon (Penstemon pachyphyllus) is a resilient, drought-tolerant perennial primarily native to southern Utah and northern Arizona. It is known for its striking spikes of tubular, lavender to blue flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, attracting hummingbirds, bees, and other native pollinators. The plant’s thick, fleshy, bluish-green leaves give it a unique texture and help it retain moisture, making it especially well-suited for our dry climate.
Growing up to 2' tall, thickleaf penstemon thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils and is highly adaptable to dry, challenging conditions. Its compact, clumping habit makes it a perfect choice for water-wise landscapes, rock gardens, and pollinator plantings.
