Threetip Sagebrush (Artemisia tripartita) is a tough, fine-leaved native shrub found in Norther Utah that thrives in harsh, open environments where few other plants compete. Its dense, silver-gray foliage gives it a soft texture and makes it useful as a contrast plant in dryland gardens or restoration settings. Like its close cousin Wyoming big sage, threetip is extremely drought-tolerant and thrives in rocky, alkaline soils with full sun exposure.
This species works beautifully on sunny slopes, dry meadow plantings, and even in wildlife-friendly urban landscapes where you want structure and subtle color. While its flowers are small and understated, they support beneficial native insects well into the fall. Its tidy shape and moderate size also make it more adaptable than larger sagebrush species. Pair it with rabbitbrush, penstemon, or globemallow for a waterwise design that echoes Utah’s wild beauty.
