'Goldtau' Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’) is a graceful and elegant addition to garden borders, rain gardens, and woodland-edge settings. Unlike many ornamental grasses, it holds up well in partial shade, and its chartreuse-yellow plumes really pop when backlit later in the season. Even when the blooms fade to bronze-tan, Goldtau keeps the landscape interesting through winter.
Just keep it evenly moist—this grass appreciates consistent moisture and does best in organically rich soil. It’s not a drought-lover, but in exchange, you get a semi-evergreen form that looks good year-round and attracts pollinators in early summer. Plus, it’s low-maintenance—cut back old foliage in late winter, and it bounces back quickly.
