Woods' Rose (rosa woodsii), is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to the western region of the US and Canada. This versatile plant thrives in various soil types and light conditions and elevations including the Wasatch front valley.
In late spring to early summer, Rosa woodsii produces fragrant, single pink flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Following the blooms, the plant forms bright red rose hips rich in vitamin C, which are edible and can be used in teas, jellies, or as a nutritious snack and are also enjoyed by birds, squirrels and deer. Its dense, bushy form and thorny stems provide excellent wildlife habitat and can also serve as effective erosion control. Woods' Rose is typically found in thickets and sends up suckers to expand its territory. As with traditional roses, early spring pruning and infrequent, deep irrigation in the summer helps this plant maintain a more organized, lush form.
