Blue Grama Grass 'Blonde Ambition' (Bouteloua gracilis 'Blonde Ambition') is a cultivated selection, chosen for its unusually upright, horizontal seed heads and consistent form. Unlike the straight species, this cultivar is largely sterile and does not readily reseed, making it a great choice for more controlled plantings where you want the look of Blue Grama without it spreading.
Native to Utah and well-adapted to the Wasatch Front, Blue Grama thrives in heat, lean soils, and low-water conditions where many ornamentals struggle. This selection maintains all of that toughness while offering a more refined, uniform appearance.
Its signature “eyelash-like” seed heads float above the foliage from midsummer through fall, catching the light and adding a soft, architectural element to the landscape. As they dry, they hold their structure beautifully, extending visual interest well into winter.
This is an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings, dry meadow designs, and modern xeriscapes. It pairs especially well with native wildflowers, where its fine texture and movement help tie a planting together without overwhelming neighboring plants.
