‘Everett’s Choice’ Hummingbird Trumpet (Epilobium canum var. latifolium ‘Everett’s Choice’) is a hummingbird favorite that covers itself in brilliant scarlet-red blooms just as many summer flowers begin to fade. Compared to ‘Firechalice,’ it has a broader, more vigorous spreading habit, creating a dense carpet of silvery-green foliage that looks especially striking spilling over retaining walls, weaving through rock gardens, or cascading from containers. The vivid trumpet-shaped flowers appear from mid-summer into fall, bringing intense color and constant pollinator activity to dry garden spaces.
Like ‘Firechalice,’ this is a rugged, drought-adapted perennial that thrives in lean, well-drained soils and needs very little supplemental water once established. ‘Everett’s Choice’ is especially valued for its wider spread and fuller groundcover effect, making it an excellent option for stabilizing slopes or filling larger sunny areas with low-maintenance color. Deer typically ignore it, and its resilience in heat, poor soils, and high-desert conditions makes it a dependable choice for xeriscapes, native-inspired plantings, and pollinator gardens.
