'Firechalice' Hummingbird Trumpet (Epilobium canum subsp. latifolium) is a hummingbird magnet that bursts into a fireworks display of scarlet blooms just when most of the garden is starting to wind down. Its trailing, mounding habit makes it perfect for softening rock walls, spilling over containers, or filling in dry slopes with late-season color. The fine-textured foliage stays neat and green through the hot summer, then suddenly lights up with masses of trumpet-shaped flowers from mid-summer into fall.

This is a tough, no-nonsense perennial built for dry climates and high elevations. It thrives in lean, well-drained soils where fussier plants might fail, and once established, it asks for very little water. Deer tend to leave it alone, and it’s virtually carefree, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscapes, xeriscapes, and pollinator gardens.

This selection was originally collected in Payson canyon.
