Smooth Sumac

Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) is one of those native shrubs that really earns its space, especially in larger landscapes where it has room to do its thing. Its lush, almost tropical-looking foliage creates a surprisingly bold texture through summer, then turns brilliant shades of orange and scarlet in fall. Female plants add upright clusters of deep red fruit that can persist into winter, providing both seasonal interest and valuable food for wildlife.

This is also an excellent choice for tough, open sites where a more delicate shrub might struggle. Smooth Sumac naturally spreads by underground suckers, gradually forming a colony that can stabilize slopes, fill awkward expanses, or create a beautiful informal screen. Give it room to spread and plenty of sunshine, and it can become a dramatic, resilient part of a native landscape.
