Switch Grass ‘Shenandoah’ (Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’) is one of the most striking ornamental grasses for adding movement and rich seasonal color to the landscape. Emerging blue-green in spring, the foliage quickly develops dramatic burgundy-red tones that intensify through summer and fall, creating a bold vertical accent without becoming overwhelming in size. Its airy flower panicles float above the foliage late in the season, catching evening light beautifully and providing texture well into winter.
This variety is especially valued for its adaptability and low-maintenance nature. Once established, it handles drought, heat, and cold with ease while remaining upright and tidy through much of the year. Shenandoah works equally well in modern landscapes, pollinator gardens, prairie-style plantings, and mixed perennial borders where its color and structure provide contrast against flowering plants and shrubs.
