Western Maidenhair Fern

Western Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum aleuticum) is one of those plants that makes a shady, damp corner feel instantly more lush. Delicate, fan-shaped fronds spread outward from striking black stems, giving it an airy texture that looks almost tropical—even though this remarkably hardy fern is native to Utah's mountains and can handle seriously cold winters.

This is an especially good choice for those tricky garden spots where many of our sun-loving Utah natives aren't happy. Tuck it beside a shaded water feature, along the north side of a building, beneath trees, or among rocks where the soil stays consistently moist. Given the right conditions, it slowly expands into an elegant colony and pairs beautifully with woodland and riparian natives.
