White Fir

White Fir (Abies concolor) is a handsome, classic conifer with a naturally tidy shape that requires little pruning to maintain. Its soft, silvery blue-green needles give it a somewhat spruce-like appearance, but the needles are noticeably flatter and softer to the touch. As it matures, the smooth gray bark develops more texture, while the upright cones add seasonal interest high in the canopy.

This is a particularly good choice when you want a substantial native evergreen that feels at home in a mountain landscape. It works beautifully as a specimen tree, wind-protected screen, or long-term winter-interest planting, and its dense branching also provides useful shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife. Give it adequate room to mature and avoid persistently wet or poorly drained locations.
